JOB SUMMARY

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce, responsible for strategic leadership, financial oversight, membership growth, and community engagement. Reporting to the Board of Directors, this role ensures the effective implementation of policies, programs, and events that support local businesses and economic development. Key responsibilities include overseeing daily operations, managing staff, fostering relationships with government and civic leaders, organizing events, and maintaining communication with members. The ideal candidate possesses strong leadership, financial management, and communication skills, with experience in nonprofit or business administration. Flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, are required to support Chamber initiatives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Directors to carry out the work of the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce.

  • Ensures that the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and the officers are kept fully informed of the conditions and operations of the Chamber and all other organizations on all important factors influencing them; attends all meetings of the Board and the Executive Committee.
  • Plans, formulates, and recommends for the approval of the Board of Directors basic policies and programs that will further the objectives of the Chamber and all other organizations as noted.
  • Develops for the purpose of day-to-day administration specific policies, procedures, and programs to implement the general policies established by the Board of Directors; adheres to goals, policies, procedures and by-laws.
  • Provides the necessary liaison and staff support to Board committee chairs and to committee members to enable them to properly perform their functions; sees that committee decisions and recommendations are submitted to the Board for approval
  • Executes such contracts, grants, and commitments as may be authorized by the Board of Directors, or by established policies.
  • Evaluates local needs and plans, organizes and directs events, programs and services; evaluates results and recommends policies, procedures, and action to achieve program goals..
  • Provides guidance on matters of program, publications, budget, and legal responsibility
  • Responsible for the planning and administration of official meetings of the Chamber
  • Plans and executes communications to the Chamber’s clientele, including social media, email, newsletters, general mailings, news releases, etc.
  • Represents in a professional manner, the Chamber and all other organizations. Partnership in local, state, and regional entities to foster cooperation and enhance implementation of chamber goals.
  • Government/Civic Affairs-Keep informed about legislative issues at all levels of government that could impact the Fulton County-area business community.
  • Works with committee chairs to ensure all events/projects are as effective as possible, including the maintenance of written records, timelines, budgets and evaluations.
  • Oversee the Chamber and all other organizations, finances and fiscal reporting (coordinating with the Executive Assistant, Board treasurer and/or the CPA) to consistently keep the board and committee chairs informed.
  • Develop and present an annual strategic plan to the Board, due at November board meeting for coming year.
  • Stay informed of local, regional, national and international developments that could affect local business; keep members informed of such developments .
  • Carries out other general responsibilities delegated by the Board of Directors.

Operation of the Administrative Office

  • Directs and coordinates approved programs, projects, and major activities of the staff
  • Supervises the Executive Assistant for the Chamber, maintaining official minutes of the Board and other official meetings of the organization, provides security for all files, legal and historic documents, mailing lists, and client files.
  • Obtains maximum utilization of the staff by clearly defining duties, establishing performance standards, conducting performance reviews, and recommending competitive salary structure.

Management of Fiscal Resources

  • In partnership with the Executive Board of Directors of the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce, Executive Director aids in the development and recommendation of annual budget. Once board approved annual budget Executive Director is responsible for operating within the approved annual budget.
  • Ensures that all funds, physical assets, and other property of the Chamber are appropriately safeguarded and administered. Arranges for an annual audit or review if necessary.

Membership

  • Develops and coordinates all membership solicitation efforts of the organization, including solicitation of new members and the maintenance of current members
  • Evaluates member needs and translates them into action that is consistent with the Chamber goals and mission.
  • Establishes and maintains effective lines of communication between member organizations and the Chamber, which includes acquainting him/herself with member organizations. This includes regular visits and connections to member organizations.
  • Provides counsel and assistance, where needed, to membership so that they receive maximum Chamber benefits.
  • Manage all membership recruitment and retention plans.
  • Cultivate relationships with potential new members.

Relationships

  • The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Directors for proper interpretation and fulfillment of all his or her functions, responsibilities, authority, and relationships.
  • The Executive Director is a member of the Board of Directors ex officio without the right to vote.
  • The Executive Director serves as overall liaison to all program advisory committees and the Executive Committee.
  • The Executive Director maintains personal contacts with staff, the Board of Directors, and the Chamber members to the greatest degree possible.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Experience with not for profits; preferably in leadership position.
  • Experience in developing and adhering to annual budgets.
  • Strong organizational skills; planning and implementation, scheduling, time management, detail-oriented.
  • Experience in business or working with businesses and government leaders.
  • Excellent communication skills – written, oral and presentation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills including demonstrated ability to engage people individually and in groups at all levels.
  • Proven history in fundraising.
  • Ability to work independently and take a great deal of initiative.
  • Basic levels of proficiency with business software including Quick Books, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as a basic understanding of social media, websites and applications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with federal, state, regional, and local agencies, community leaders, and the general public
  • Ability to determine confidential information and maintain confidentiality as appropriate.
  • Training: Engage in ongoing professional training as needed to maintain current demands of the position.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Degree in business, not for profit management, marketing, or 5 years of commensurate experience in these or closely related fields is preferred

POSITION HOURS

While standard hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, must be flexible to work evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Minimum regular hours are: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • This is an overtime exempt position. Overtime or compensatory hours are a function of time management rather than compensation. Extraordinary or unanticipated issues can be negotiated with the Chairman and Board as required.
  • The Executive Director is to ensure the office is covered by an assistant or volunteer when out of the office.
  • The Executive Director is expected to attend all Chamber and other organization sponsored events.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

To perform this job successfully, the Executive Director should be able to perform each of the duties associated with the responsibilities described above. The physical demands described herein are those that must be met to successfully perform the duties of this position:

  • Sit, stand, walk and periodically climb, stoop, or kneel
  • Lift 10 pounds regularly and periodically up to 50 pounds
  • Listen, talk and view written and spoken instructions; record and interpret materials and guidance.
  • Drive and transport items for events.
