The Fulton County Community Foundation recently awarded a $6,000 grant from the
Nick Patterson Legacy Fund to Columbia Elementary School to support the launch of a
new summer childcare program for Rochester Community School students.
The program will serve children in kindergarten through fifth grade and operate Monday
through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. throughout the summer.
“This program is intended to support working families in Fulton County by providing an
affordable, high-quality childcare option that allows parents to maintain employment
while ensuring their children have a safe and engaging place to spend their summer,”
said Columbia Elementary Principal Jason Snyder.
Families across Rochester have expressed a growing need for dependable childcare
options, particularly during the summer when school is not in session. The new program
will help address this need by offering structured activities, educational field trips,
hands-on learning opportunities, and service projects that encourage students to grow
socially while staying active and engaged.
Funds from the Nick Patterson Legacy Fund will help cover the cost of field trips,
student activities, transportation, snacks, and other program expenses. A portion of the
funding will also help support families in need so that the program remains accessible to
more students in the community.
“It was an honor to have known Nick Patterson personally, and seeing his legacy
continue in Rochester today is truly special,” Snyder said.
One unique component of the program will be a student-led day of community giving.
During this project, students will have the opportunity to give back locally and learn the
value of service and civic responsibility.
The grant was made possible through the Nick Patterson Legacy Fund: Serving Others,
Honoring His Sacrifice. The fund honors the life of Sgt. Nicholas “Nick” James Patterson
of Rochester, who was known for his generous spirit and commitment to helping others.
By helping launch this new childcare program, the fund continues Nick’s legacy of
service while supporting families and students in Rochester.
