On what would have been his 43rd birthday, the Fulton County Community Foundation is honoring the life and legacy of Sgt. Nicholas “Nick” James Patterson by sharing the story behind the Nick Patterson Legacy Fund: Serving Others, Honoring His Sacrifice.
Born and raised in Rochester, Nick was known as someone people felt comfortable around. He was down to earth, genuine, and quietly generous. He loved basketball and baseball and cheered faithfully for the Cubs, the Colts, and the IU Hoosiers. He enjoyed working out, listening to country music, and driving his truck with the windows down. He was funny, sometimes silly, and never pretentious. Nick appreciated the simple things in life.
What stood out most about Nick was not what he accomplished, but how he treated people.
If someone needed help, he stepped in. If someone admired his shirt or his shoes, he would offer them. If a car was broken down, he pushed it. He did not help because of what someone could do for him. He helped because he genuinely cared. Generosity was simply who he was, from his teenage years into adulthood, and he preferred not to draw attention to it.
Nick loved his son deeply. Shortly before his son’s first birthday, Nick enlisted in the United States Army on May 18, 2004, as an infantryman. He wanted to become a better provider. He wanted to challenge himself and grow. He wanted to make something of himself and make the people he loved proud.
He served with the 3-505th Parachute Infantry Battalion and later with Charlie Troop, 1st Squadron 73rd Airborne Cavalry. He deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and also served in support of Hurricane Katrina. Among his many honors were the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, two Good Conduct Medals, and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge.
Those who served alongside him remember how hard he pushed himself. He expected more from himself than anyone else did. He was fiercely loyal to the men in his unit and formed close bonds with those he served beside.
Yet his military career tells only part of his story.
Nick was a loving husband to Jayme and a devoted father to their son, Reilley. He was maturing into the man he hoped to become. His faith was growing stronger, and his heart was turning more deeply toward God. He wanted to make a difference. He wanted his life to matter.
Nick passed away on September 10, 2007, at the age of 24 while participating in combat operations in Iraq.
The Nick Patterson Legacy Fund was created to carry forward the spirit that defined his life. The fund remains intentionally flexible so it can respond to community needs and create meaningful impact wherever it is most needed. It reflects Nick’s own approach to serving others. When he saw a need, he acted.
Through this fund, Nick’s story continues to be told in the way his family believes matters most. Not simply as a soldier who served, but as a humble, caring man who looked for opportunities to help. The Nick Patterson Legacy Fund honors both his sacrifice and the generous heart that shaped his life.
